Endurance run today. I was thinking about run preparation today. I carry water, identification, house key, and a phone on my runs. I could go on about how I could write this post while running, but I will save that for another day. The running clothes that I wear are meant to keep me cool when it is hot and warm when it is cold. The running clothes that JPD wore early in his running career were still evolving. He wore tube socks that rose to mid-calf. Style was expressed in stripes, two thick blue stripes surrounding one thick red stripe at the top of the sock. The socks rose to mid-calf because elastic had not quite been perfected yet. After a run of any length, half of this tube sock would be in your shoe and the other half was a rumpled jumble around the ankle. Shorty-shorts, as we now call them, were the style of the day. These shorts were generally bleached white with a decorative border of different colors. This border material was exhaustively researched and designed to chafe you mercilessly as you ran, walked or sat in a chair. I have never confirmed this but, since compression shorts were not invented yet, the men wore tighty-whities under the shorty-shorts. Munsingwear would have been the preferred selection because they came with extra chaffy material.
I think this is why I chose to swim when I was young.
Here is a picture of the trail. Favorite song today: “She is My Everything” performed by John Prine.
